Morocco - A country I am certain to never return to.

Morocco is a North African country characterized by mountain regions, desert, and a lengthy coastline from the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Morocco is a monarchy where the royal family has full control over the government. Rabat is the capital city, but Casablanca is the largest city. Chances are your flights will fly into Casablanca as they have the larger airport and that is cheaper than flying into other airports. Like any other North African country, you will learn or you most probably know about the history of the Arabs in Morocco. Most people assume north Africans are Arabs. There are no Arabs in Africa. There are descendants of Arabs, but Moroccans are the Berber or Amazirgh people. Also, talking about the Amazirgh can offend some people the same way you cannot talk about Western Sahara. 93% of Moroccans are religious and the majority are practicing Sunni Muslims. I spent the last few days of Ramadan in Morocco in 2017, the interesting thing ab...

Traveling in Tunisia - on a budget.

A travel husband on a beach honeymoon. Welcome to North Africas tiniest country. This is Tunisia. I figured since we have touched on the things you need to know before traveling to Tunisia , its time to figure out what will we do when we get to this Mediterranean country with loads of olives, beach bumming and desert escapes and adventures. Remember, when traveling on a South African passport, you don't need a visa for Tunisia. It is a visa on arrival for 90 days free of charge. Bring your negotiating skills cos anything and everything can be negotiated. Do not negotiate with small businesses or street vendors, they are not millionaires and they are just trying to feed their families. They will not scam you so don't be that horrible traveler that nobody likes.  Passport ready... There are no direct flights from Johannesburg to Tunis, chances are you will fly to Europe first to connect to Tunisia. I know its annoying but it is what it is. Just pack your bikinis...

Things to do in Dakar

I had traveled from Nouakchott in Mauritania to Dakar, Senegal. You can read up more on Senegal and things you need to know before your travels here .  I have also shared how to travel from one country to the next on here . There are various options when it comes to accommodation around Dakar. you can find the smaller hotels that would be reasonably cheaper if you walk around the city. Or you can do what I did and make friends online and Couchsurf your way through Senegal. The lovely thing about Senegal is most of the activities that would interest you are free of charge. I have shared some of the awesome stuff to do in Dakar below: Besides the 10,000 steps I've taken almost daily since I started #BreakingBorders today I conquered 199 steps going up the African Renaissance monument to see the epic view of the city of Dakar and the coastline. #Thesolowanderer #Senegal πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡³ A post shared by Katchie Nzama (@thesolowandera) on Jul 13, 2017 at 9:50am PDT ...

What you need to know about Senegal before you travel

Senegal is a Muslim country, however, I have come to learn that like any other religion, in different countries the practice of religion is up to the people. You don’t have to dress in a hijab but it is advisable to be dressed appropriately. I use the word appropriate loosely as this often depends on where you go around the country. In certain communities, your shorts would not be appreciated but in the city, you are free to dress as you wish. In the evenings, your short shorts are encouraged as this is one party place you will not be able to keep up with. The official language in Senegal is French. With other ethnic languages such as Wolof widely spoken. The currency that is used is the West African Franc (CFA) – USD 1 : 546 CFA (be advised this changes often so you would have to check the exchange rate before your date of travel. The African Renaissance Monument is a 49 meter tall bronze statue located on top of one of the twin hills known as...

The Samburu Tribe of North-Central Kenya

Archers Post, Samburu County When many think of Kenya, they think of the Nairobi National park, the only National Park in the world found within a city. Some might think of the Maasai tribe, or the Great Wildebeest Migration. These are just some of the really popular things about the East African country of Kenya. Today we take a look and learn more about the Samburu tribe: Manyatta - A Samburu Compound. The Samburu people are an indegenous tribe of people found along the NiIe Valley. They are semi nomadic - once the grass is gone, they pack up, burn what they cant take, leave no trace and head to greener pastures for better grazing for their livestock. The Samburu can be found in North-central Kenya. They are related but very distinct from the Maasai tribe. The Samburu tribe is made up of 9 sub-clans. Our guide explains that the Maasai and the Samburu where separated 300-400 years ago during a major drought when enemies came between them. Both the tribes are foun...
